Microphone was devised to intensify and amplify small sounds, making them more distinctly audible and comprehensible, thereby facilitating long distance communication. The first microphone was invented and developed to be used as a telephone voice transmitter. The word microphone is taken from two Greek words. They are micro, which means small, and phone, which means communication.

A microphone is a form of a transducer that changes sound from one form to another. It converts sound waves, existing as patterns of air pressure, into electric signals and eventually back to sound waves through speakers. There are several techniques that can be employed in constructing a microphone but the most commonly used technique is the magneto dynamic design.

In a dynamic microphone, sound waves emitted from a source cause movements in a thin metallic diaphragm and an associated coil of wire. A magnetic field is developed around the coil with the help of a magnet and as the coil moves within this field under the effect of the sound waves, it produces an electric current. The amount of current produced depends on the velocity of that motion, so it is velocity sensitive.

Materials & Tools:

•See each wrapping description (MATERIALS AVAILABLE AT ARTS, CRAFT AND FABRIC STORES)

MIY INSTRUCTIONS:Think outside of the box for inspiration this holiday season by making the wrapping part of the gift. I even used clothing accessories such as a black velvet hat adorned with a feathered boa, a tasselled belt, a gold ascot and custom jewellery for savvy accents. Great wrapping concepts begin with fabulous finds such as jars, rice paper, feathers and Christmas tree trimmings. Fabrics such as satin, velour, taffeta, lace, toile prints and iridescent organzas combined with assorted trimmings from fancy elastics, satin piping, beaded fringe, to magnificent ribbons and tassels are key factors to these lavish presentations.Start by pressing all the fabrics and tissue papers with an iron set at a medium to low setting to remove all creases. Here are some left-to-right descriptions and simple how-to’s:

1.Toile upholstery fabric for a Renaissance style: roses and peacocks toile fabric, a plaid border, enhance with white fringe trim and a red and gold patterned ribbon. Wrap the present with the fabric, fold and tape just like a regular paper wrapping technique. Secure the folds, check border, fringe trim and ribbon with hot glue.

2.Feathered toile wallpaper fantasy: Wrap the present with the toile wallpaper, fold and tape, to secure the folds, the red and gold braided cord (wrapped around the gift in making an X shape), the red feather, a gold-leaf with a tiny ornamental ball, all with hot glue.

3.Maiden tasselled drawstring extravagance: Vertically wrap a strip of patterned sheer curtain fabric along the midpoint of the box, tape at the back. Then wrap the box with red and gold Jacquard fabric, over the sheer fabric leaving a 6-inch opening at the center of the box. Fold and tape at the top and bottom of the box, securing with hot glue. Measure the white elastic eyelet trim to make sure the eyelet loops are even on each side, then fasten on vertically with hot glue covering the edge of the fabric. Weave the satin gold piping in and out of the eyelet loops making a crisscross design. Add a gold tassel to each piping end simply by tying the tassel loop and piping into a knot.

If you have receipts coming from groceries, boutiques and even restaurants, chances are those receipts are printed using thermal printers. Unlike most printers that would need a toner or ink, thermal printers use heat to transfer the image to the paper. Currently, most of the thermal printers that are available in the market are those that can only print text and images using one color, often black. There are a number of thermal printers now available that can print two colors: black and red. These are called two-color direct thermal printers. These work by applying heat in two different temperatures on the paper to create the change in the color.

Aside from receipts, thermal printing technology is also used in most fax machines that are available in the market. It is also used in the medical field for printing ultrasound imaging results.

How do Thermal Printers Work?

A thermo-sensitive paper is inserted between the thermal head and the rubber roller that would feed the paper through the printer. The thermal printer then sends a current of electricity to the heating resistor located on the thermal head.

Colors send distinct messages. Subconsciously, we’ve been trained to respond in a variety of ways to practically every color of the rainbow. For instance, green is almost always associated with “go” (green lights), the coming of spring as well as freshness and also trust. Orange, according to color psychologists, denotes energy and enthusiasm. This is probably why the champions of causes chose to use colored ribbons when supporting their beliefs.

As far back as 1917, singer/songwriter George Norton penned the song, “‘Round Her Neck She Wears A Yellow Ribbon.” A revised version was later used in the movie “She Wore A Yellow Ribbon.” The words recount the tale of a young girl waiting for the return of her love who was serving in the military. In 1979, yellow ribbons saw resurgence as Penne Laingen tied this symbol around her tree when her husband, US diplomat Bruce Laingen, was held captive during the Iran hostage crisis.

But yellow isn’t the only symbol of hope. What’s the first thought that comes to mind when you see a pink ribbon? Breast cancer. In 1992, at the hands of Self magazine editor Alexandra Penney and cosmetic giant Estee Lauder, the ribbon symbol was adopted as the icon for the National Breast Cancer Awareness Month campaign. The color pink was chosen and the new emblem was quickly adopted by the American public.
